Valverán 20 Manzanas, made by Masaveu Bodegas at their cider mill in Sariego, has been awarded the prize of best ice cider at the contest for the best ciders and apple products in Asturias. This is the third time that Valverán ice cider has been given an award at this competition.
Españar, Mayador, Angelón Rosé, Roxtum, Gaitero, Oles, y Valle, Ballina and Fernández won prizes in other categories.
This weekend, the village of Nava shall host the forty-third edition of the Cider Festival, considered a Festival of National Tourist Interest. This festival began in 1969 to honour the regions traditional drink and to showcase the elaboration process and quality of this product.
In recent years, this innovative product has been awarded with several prestigious national and international awards, such as the Gold Medal in the Gilbert & Gaillard Guide 2018, the first prize in the ice cider category at The International Hall of Gala Ciders 2017 and the gold medal in 2019.
Valverán 20 Manzanas Ice Cider
Valverán was founded in 1999, being the first and most exclusive ice cider on the Iberian Peninsula. The name Valverán 20 manzanas arose due to the quantity of apples required to make each 37.5 cl. bottle, given that each contains the concentrated juice of at least 20 apples.
To obtain this drink, a complex process of freezing at minus 20 degrees is used, followed by a fermentation period of 10 months and aging on fine lees for 12 months. The whole process takes around two years from the moment of harvesting the apples until the bottle reaches the consumer, preserving the initial fruit and sensorial qualities.
This exclusive product was achieved thanks to the visionary nature of José Masaveu, managing director of Bodegas Masaveu, this is his most personal project, involving almost ten years of research and trials. Amongst the five projects in Masaveu Bodegas, this is the only one that is situated in the homeland of Asturias.
Today, 35 hectares of land, situated in the Cider from Asturias Protected Designation of Origin, precisely on the El Rebollar Estate in Sariego (Asturias), with 20,000 apple trees of several different varietals (Blanquina, Xuanina, Regona, Raxao, Fuentes, Collaos, De la Riega, Verdialona, Perico, Durona de Tresali and San Roqueña) enable us to produce 13,500 bottles of this distinguished ice cider which is full of nuances.
This drink is fresh and surprising and pairs perfectly with foie, cheeses and not very sweet desserts.
The Masaveu family first invested in the wine sector in 1974, when they purchased Bodegas Murua, however the family’s first vineyards date back to the middle of the 19th century, precisely in Castellar del Vallés where the family originally comes from and where Federico Masaveu Rivell began a journey to be continued one century later by his descendants.
