The most premium wine from Masaveu Family Wineries’ La Rioja winery, Veguín de Murua Gran Reserva, has been awarded a Gold Medal at the Decanter World Wine Awards 2021, one of the most influential wine competitions in the world.
Veguín de Murua Gran Reserva 2012 obtained a score of 95 points in the eighteenth edition of the DWWA, distinguishing this wine, which has been awarded a Gold medal. The members of the jury are made up of the best international wine tasters and experts, including Masters of Wine and Master Sommeliers from all over the world.
Veguín de Murua Gran Reserva is a wine made from almost centenary vineyards, harvested by hand, and located in Sierra Cantabria. This red wine, vinified with total respect for the raw material with Tempranillo, Graciano and Mazuelo grape varieties, is only produced in exceptional vintages and only in limited editions. Only 12,200 bottles of this 2012 vintage, classified as very good, were produced.
Special 18,000-litre French oak vats were used for its malolactic fermentation, after which it was aged for 30 months in new French and American oak barrels and then rested in the winery’s underground cellars for bottle ageing. Intense, bright cherry-red in colour, with pleasant balsamic notes, and menthol and spicy aromas. Powerful, complex, and balanced on the nose. Very expressive on the palate with good volume. The oak is surprisingly well integrated with a balanced freshness. Lively, long, and delicate on the palate.
Oenologist Mathieu Barrault states “Veguín de Murua Gran Reserva represents the commitment and trajectory of this winery, the first in the winemaking group, to producing high quality personal wines for ageing. It is a classic wine which especially expresses the terroir from which it comes”.
All the red wines from this winery obtained scores equal to or higher than 90 points at this competition, with the following three wines being awarded a Silver Medal: Vs Murua 2018, 91 points; Murua Reserva 2014 and M de Murua 2017, 90 points.
Masaveu Family Wineries, the group to which this winery belongs, has obtained a total of four bronze medals, six silver medals and high scores with other brands such as Leda, Fillaboa or Pagos de Araiz.
Murua Winery, part of Masaveu Family Wineries, is located in the mythical village of Elciego, in the heart of La Rioja Alavesa. In a setting full of breathtaking landscapes, the noble main building maintains the structure of the ancestral homes typical of this area of La Rioja Alavesa.
The winery has belonged to the Masaveu family for 47 years, when it was acquired to produce wine privately until, years later, they decided to remodel it and promote it commercially with a firm commitment to quality.
Murua currently produces 220,000 bottles made following the ecological philosophy and environmentally friendly methods which define this winemaking group, present in different Geographical Indications in Spain.
Masaveu Family Wineries
The Masaveu family began to invest in the sector in 1974, but the family’s vineyard plantations date back to the middle of the 19th century, specifically in Castellar del Vallés, where the family originated and where Federico Masaveu Rivell took the first steps which his descendants would subsequently follow a century later.
Since then, Masaveu Family Wineries has grown to become a benchmark in the sector, thanks to the quality of their wines in different Denominations of Origin, their environmental philosophy and the utmost respect they show for the land. The winery has their own vineyard plantations, through which they succeed in capturing, in each bottle, the unique personality of each terroir. Therefore, each and every one of the projects that Masaveu Family Wineries embarks on in different parts and regions of the country are united in a common denominator: Murua (DOCa Rioja), Fillaboa (DO Rías Baixas), Pagos de Araiz (DO Navarra), Leda (Wine from the Land of Castilla y León) and Valverán (Asturias).
