Fillaboa’s Albariño wines highly rated by Tim Atkin in his Rías Baixas 2024 Special

Dec 17, 2024 | Fillaboa Wineries

The white wines from Fillaboa Wineries, situated in Salvaterra de Miño (Province of Pontevedra), have been awarded high scores by the prestigious British Master of Wine Tim Atkin in his Rías Baixas 2024 Special Report. La Fillaboa 1898 2016 has received 96 points, Fillaboa Selección Finca Monte Alto 2021 has received 94 points and Fillaboa 2023 has received 93 points.

Futhermore, the photograph on the cover, chosen by the British journalist and critic, is of one of the most emblematic plots belonging to this historical Galician winery and also the highest on the Fillaboa Estate: Monte Alto. In his article he states that “the vineyards at Fillaboa, along the Miño River, are some of the most attractive in Rías Baixas where this mature and intense Albariño wine comes from” made by the oenologist at Fillaboa, Isabel Salgado, referring to La Fillaboa 1898 2016. He gave this wine 96 points and says that this award-winning wine is “dense and concentrated, and enhanced by its acidity and granite minerality” and that “it has a creamy mid-palate with pear and grapefruit flavours, a touch of toasted bread and a long, sharp and refreshing finish”.

He also highlights the work carried out in the vineyard and his conversations with Antonio González, Vineyard Manager at Fillaboa Wineries, who says that “you have to prune well and sometimes carry out a green harvest”, and that “not many of the vineyards are over 30 years old” as well as the reviews that he dedicates to Fillaboa Selección Finca Monte Alto 2021 with 94 points or Fillaboa 2023 with 93 points.

About Bodegas Fillaboa

Fillaboa is a historical Galician estate which has remained indivisible for centuries and is one of the largest, oldest and most beautiful in Galicia and the only one that, due to its special features, forms part of the Grandes Pagos de España Association. Behind the 1,600-metre-thick stone wall that protects the property, lie the vineyards, the winery and the spectacular, refurbished stately manor. Fifty hectares of Albariño grape vineyards, planted on rolling slopes, form the Fillaboa estate which has a total of 74 hectares divided into 12 plots on the natural border with Portugal, alongside the Tea and Miño Rivers. The granite-based soils, Atlantic climate and mild temperatures due to the proximity of the sea, make Fillaboa a privileged place to grow the native Albariño grape.
