The flagship wine of Masaveu Bodegas in Rioja Alavesa, Murua Reserva, has won a Gold Medal with its 2016 vintage at the Wines From Spain Awards 2025.
This biennial wine competition is a joint project of ICEX-VINOS DE ESPAÑA and MUNDUS VINI, aimed at promoting the image of Spanish wines based on their quality, variety, and diversity. In this edition, over 400 wines were evaluated in the tasting held in December 2024 at Meininger Verlag under the direction of Spanish experts Christoph Nicklas and David Schwarzwälder, with 30 top-level tasters from eleven different countries—including high-ranking industry legends such as Sarah Jane Evans MW, Doug Frost MW MS, Almudena Alberca MW, and Beth Willard.
The awards ceremony will take place at Prowein 2025, where the winning wines will be presented internationally for the first time at the ICEX Pavilion of Prowein 2025.

Murua Reserva 2016 is a venture of Wineries Murua, located in Elciego, in Rioja Alavesa, which has produced this wine following highly controlled processes to achieve a red wine of very high quality.
This 92% Tempranillo and 8% Graciano and Mazuelo is the result of an exquisite treatment of grapes from old vineyards on a small hill in Elciego. Fermentation and racking take place in French and American oak barrels, where the wine remains for 20 months. With a minimum of four years of bottle aging in the winery’s underground cellar, Murua Reserva 2016 reaches its optimal degree of maturity and roundness.
The result of this entire process is an attractive wine with an intense, fresh, and elegant aroma. On the palate, it stands out for its elegance and good smoothness, with aromas of cherry, thyme, strawberry, and fermented dairy, creating a balanced and harmonious wine.
This wine has been recognized with numerous awards and has achieved excellent results in the main wine guides. For example, it received 97 points in the 2025 Guide Gourmets and won the Gold Medal at The Drinks Business 2024.
About Masaveu Wineries
The Masaveu family began investing in the winemaking sector in 1974, when they acquired Bodegas Murua, but the family’s vineyard plantings date back to the mid-19th century, specifically in Castellar del Vallés, where the family originates and where Federico Masaveu Rivell started the steps that a century later would be continued by his descendants.
Since then, Masaveu Wineries has grown steadily with a strong commitment to quality in the production of its wines across different DOs, embracing an ecological philosophy and utmost respect for the land, where it owns its own vineyards, allowing them to convey the unique personality of each terroir in every bottle. In this way, all of Masaveu Wineries’ projects across different parts and regions of the country come together under a common denominator: Murua (DOCa. Rioja), Fillaboa (DO. Rías Baixas), Leda (Wine of Tierra de Castilla y León) and Valverán (Asturias).
