Murua Winery in Rioja Alavesa, belonging to the prestigious winemaking group Masaveu Family Wineries, has just received the Sustainable Wineries For Climate Protection (SWfCP) stamp which proves its environmental, social, economic and governance commitment.
In terms of environmental sustainability, this is the first and only specific certificate for wineries and was created by the Spanish Wine Federation (FEV). Including this winery in D.O.Ca Rioja, a total of 74 wineries in Spain hold the WFCP Certificate, eight of which are in Álava. Pagos de Araiz Winery (D.O. Navarra), also belonging to Masaveu Family Wineries winemaking group, already holds this certificate and Fillaboa Winery in DO Rías Baixas shall be the next winery to obtain it.
The SWfCP certificate assesses wineries commitment to the fight against climate change and their dedication to sustainability in four specific areas: the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), energy efficiency, waste reduction, and correct and responsible water management.
All of the vineyards owned by Murua Winery have been certified as organic, the 51 plots covering 80 ha. are situated in the towns of Elciego, Villabuena de Álava, Lanciego, Leza and Navaridas.
Furthermore, for some time now, this Rioja winery has been applying regenerative viticulture to regenerate the soil and increase its capacity to capture atmospheric carbon, one of the causes of global warming.
About Murua Winery and Masaveu Family Wineries
Murua Winery is situated in the beautiful town of Elciego, right in the heart of la Rioja Alavesa. The main building retains the structure of the traditional manor houses typical to the area. Bought by the Masaveu Family in 1974, this was the first winery to form part of Masaveu Family Wineries, a prestigious winemaking group in Spain,. The group is now present in five different strategic geographical locations: Murua (D.O.Ca. Rioja), Fillaboa (D.O. Rías Baixas), Pagos de Araiz (D.O. Navarra), Leda (Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León) and Valverán Ice cider (Asturias).
Since then, Masaveu Family Wineries has grown to become a leader in the wine sector, due to the high quality of the wines that they make in several DO´s, their environmental philosophy and their maximum respect for the land where they own their own vineyards, thanks to which they succeed in transmitting the unique personality of the terroir in each and every bottle.
