VS Murua 2020, produced by the Alava-based winery Murua, located in Rioja Alavesa — specifically in Elciego — and part of the Masaveu Bodegas wine group, has been awarded the Grand Gold Medal in the fourth edition of the Royal Casino of Madrid Wine Competition. The jury, made up of a team of experts with extensive national and international experience, awarded 23 Grand Gold Medals, 79 Gold Medals, and 85 Silver Medals to wines from all over Spain.
This competition, which promotes the winning wines in 280 prestigious social clubs in Spain and abroad, aims to “highlight, showcase, and spread awareness of the immense diversity and richness of wines produced in Spain, fostering wine culture and its social and economic importance.”
Founded in 1836, the Royal Casino of Madrid is one of the most prestigious private social clubs in the world. Its headquarters is a unique building declared a Site of Cultural Interest in 1993, housing important works of art.

VS Murua, whose label has been updated for this 2020 vintage, is a red Rioja wine of great personality, elegance, and fruit expression. It is a seductive wine that reflects its origin —the Alavesa Sierra— and comes from a fantastic vintage for wine lovers like 2020.
It is one of the two modern-style wines produced by the winery, along with M de Murua, in which the raw material —the grape— plays a leading role. With this aim, the vineyards from which it comes, located in the surroundings of the winery, are carefully tended.
VS Murua is a red wine aged for 16 months in French and American oak barrels, made from 90% Tempranillo and 10% Mazuelo grapes.
It has a beautiful, bright ruby-red color with violet hues, an intense fruity aroma, and on the palate it is elegant, smooth, fresh, and pleasant, with a long, sweet, and captivating finish.

About Murua Wineries and Masaveu Wineries
Murua Winery, part of Masaveu Wineries, is located in the beautiful town of Elciego, in the heart of Rioja Alavesa. Surrounded by stunning landscapes, the main noble building retains the structure of the traditional manor houses typical of this area. The Masaveu family acquired this winery in 1974, making it the first of five wineries that today form Masaveu Wineries, a renowned Spanish wine group, already present in five strategic geographical indications: Murua (D.O.Ca. Rioja), Fillaboa (D.O. Rías Baixas), Pagos de Araiz (D.O. Navarra), Leda (Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León), and the ice cider Valverán (Asturias).
Since then, Masaveu Winerieshas grown to become a benchmark for the quality of its wines across different DOs, as well as for its environmental philosophy and utmost respect for the land, where it owns its own vineyards, allowing it to convey the unique personality of each terroir in every bottle.
