Bodegas Murua, amongst the best wines of the D.O.Ca Rioja in the renowned publication The Drinks Business

The wines from Bodegas Murua, located in Rioja Alavesa and part of the prestigious Masaveu Bodegas group, won four Gold Medals in the renowned British publication The Drinks Business.

Five of this winery’s wines received recognition at the Autumn Tasting held on September 5 in Bellanger, London. One gold in the oaked white wine category, and three golds and one silver in the oaked red wine category. Among the five gold medals awarded to wines from the D.O.Ca Rioja, four went to Bodegas Murua: Murua Blanco Fermentado en Barrica, Murua Reserva, M de Murua, and Veguín de Murua Gran Reserva.

Murua Blanco Fermentado en Barrica 2022 presents a straw-yellow color. Its production has followed a traditional process, with the manual harvesting of Viura, Malvasía, and Garnacha Blanca grapes, and a selection at the winery using an artificial vision machine for optimal, grain-by-grain sorting. The wine ferments in new French and American oak barrels for 15 days, and once fermentation is complete, it is aged in the same barrels, on its lees, for nine and a half months before being transferred to Murua’s bottle cellar.

Murua Reserva 2016 is the flagship of Bodegas Murua, which has produced this wine following very carefully controlled processes to achieve a red wine of the highest quality.

This 92% Tempranillo and 8% Graciano and Mazuelo is the result of an exquisite treatment of grapes from old vineyards on a small hill in Elciego. Fermentation and racking take place in French and American oak barrels, where the wine remains for 20 months. With a minimum of four years of bottle aging in the winery’s underground cellar, Murua Reserva 2016 reaches its optimal degree of maturity and roundness.

The Tempranillo and Graciano grapes used for Veguín de Murua Gran Reserva 2016 were selected from very old vineyards, some nearly a century old, located in the finest estates of Bodegas Murua. The fermentation and maceration processes last twenty days. After that, malolactic fermentation takes place on the lees in French oak vats, and over the following 24 months, the wine ages in new French and American oak barrels. The rest of the aging process takes place in the bottle itself, in the winery’s underground cellars, in total absence of light and vibrations, allowing the wine to reach its full potential. This Gran Reserva, with an intense and bright garnet color, produced only in exceptional vintages and limited editions, is a wine that stands out for its special elegance and lingering finish.

For its part, M de Murua 2021 is one of the winery’s flagship wines, part of its most modern line, and a true example of the care taken in cultivating the grapes from its Rioja vineyards. The Tempranillo grapes come from an exclusive selection of the oldest vineyards owned by the winery in the Laguardia area, Rioja Alavesa. M de Murua is produced in the winery’s concrete tanks and then aged for 18 months in new French oak barrels.

About Masaveu Wineries

The Masaveu family began investing in the winemaking sector in 1974, when they acquired Bodegas Murua, but the family’s vineyard plantings date back to the mid-19th century, specifically in Castellar del Vallés, where the family originates and where Federico Masaveu Rivell started the steps that a century later would be continued by his descendants.

Since then, Masaveu Wineries has grown steadily with a strong commitment to quality in the production of its wines across different DOs, embracing an ecological philosophy and utmost respect for the land, where it owns its own vineyards, allowing them to convey the unique personality of each terroir in every bottle. In this way, all of Masaveu Bodegas’ projects in different parts and regions of the country are united under a common denominator: Murua (DOCa Rioja), Fillaboa (DO Rías Baixas), Leda (Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León), and Valverán (Asturias).
