The Albariño wine from Rías Baixas, “La Fillaboa 1898” from Fillaboa Wineries, has won the Best in Show award at Decanter.

La Fillaboa 1898, the most premium wine from Bodegas Fillaboa, was awarded Best in Show at the 2019 Decanter World Wine Awards.

Fillaboa 1898 has received 97 points in the 16th edition of the DWWA, standing out among the 16,800 wines presented, along with the Best in Show recognition, which is superior to the bronze, silver, gold, and platinum medals. The judging panel is composed of the best wine experts from around the world, including some Masters of Wine and Master Sommeliers.

It comes from the finest grapes of eight plots and has undergone six years of aging on fine lees, which gives this Albariño exceptional volume and roundness on the palate—qualities rarely found in this type of wine. In addition, it preserves the freshness of young Albariños while enhancing the complexity and elegance of great white wines.
In honor of those historic journeys, Fillaboa Wineries decided in 2017 to release this wine, which had been aging on its lees since 2010.

Isabel Salgado, the winemaker at Fillaboa Wineries for over twenty years, states that “this wine represents the commitment to innovation, knowledge of the Albariño grape, and the research into our grapes and vineyards. It is an original wine made by itself that elevates Albariño to the highest level of quality.”
All the wines from this winery have scored over 90 points in this competition. Fillaboa 2017 and Fillaboa Selección Finca Monte Alto 2017 earned silver medals with 90 and 91 points, respectively. Masaveu Bodegas, the group to which this winery belongs, has won a total of six silver medals and high scores with other brands, such as Bodegas Leda’s Leda Viñas Viejas 2016 (93 points) and Más de Leda 2016 (91 points), as well as Bodegas Murua’s M de Murua 2016 (92 points) and Veguín de Murua 2010 (90 points).

Fillaboa Wineries

Fillaboa is a historic manor whose estate has remained undivided over the centuries, being one of the largest, most beautiful, and oldest estates in Galicia, and the only one that, due to its special characteristics, belongs to Grandes Pagos de España. Behind the 1,600 meters of the thick stone wall that protects the property, in addition to the vineyards, lie the winery and a spectacular reconstructed stately manor.

54 hectares of Albariño vineyards planted on rolling hills make up the Fillaboa estate, which spans a total of 74 hectares divided into 12 plots, located on the natural border with Portugal, alongside the Tea and Miño rivers. The rich soils and the Atlantic climate, with mild temperatures due to the proximity to the sea, make Fillaboa a privileged place for cultivating the native Albariño grape.

Masaveu Wineries

The Masaveu family began investing in the wine sector in 1974, when they acquired Bodegas Murua, but the family’s vineyard plantings date back to the mid-19th century, specifically in Castellar del Vallés, the family’s place of origin, where Federico Masaveu Rivell laid the foundations that his descendants would continue a century later.
In this way, all of Masaveu Bodegas’ projects across different parts and regions of the country are united under a common purpose: Murua (DOCa Rioja), Fillaboa (DO Rías Baixas), Pagos de Araiz (DO Navarra), Leda (Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León), and Valverán (Asturias).
