Masaveu Wineries receives the ISO 14001 certificate for sustainable and efficient environmental management.

Masaveu Wineries has just received the Bureau Veritas certificate, which highlights the winery group’s firm commitment to the sustainable and efficient environmental management of resources. The ISO 14001 certificate confirms the proper implementation of optimal management systems at the Murua, Fillaboa, and Pagos de Araiz wineries in terms of water, energy, and fuel consumption; emissions; resource management in the winery; and legal compliance.

This certification is an important recognition of the work carried out by this wine group over the years and of the company’s efforts to meet and continue advancing along the path of environmental protection and sustainability. “We have always been committed to caring for our surroundings, working with the utmost respect for the environment, but this certification confirms our firm commitment to values that are shared by society as a whole,” says José Masaveu, Managing Director of Masaveu Wineries.

The ISO 14001 certificate states that the Murua (DOCa Rioja), Fillaboa (DO Rías Baixas), and Pagos de Araiz (DO Navarra) wineries have implemented a system that helps prevent environmental impacts by using the necessary means to avoid, reduce, or control them, always seeking a balance with socioeconomic rationality and committing to continuous improvement.

In this regard, the document highlights the actions carried out at Pagos de Araiz aimed at reducing Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions and the amount of glass placed on the market through the use of lighter bottles. In the case of Bodegas Murua, the organization emphasizes the winery’s goal of reducing plastic in packaging boxes, among other measures, and also highlights the initiatives undertaken at the Galician winery Fillaboa, such as giving natural cork stoppers a second life.

Other Environmental Recognitions

This certificate adds to other environmental recognitions received from various organizations. In fact, Murua Wineries was already awarded last year with the Sustainable Wineries for Climate Protection (SWfCP) seal by the Spanish Wine Federation (FEV), in recognition of its environmental, social, economic, and governance commitment. Fillaboa Wineries and Pagos de Araiz also hold this distinction.

Currently, Murua Wineries has 100% of its vineyard hectares certified as organic and applies regenerative viticulture as a measure to restore the soil and increase its capacity to capture atmospheric carbon, one of the causes of global warming.

The same seal also certifies the environmental work carried out at Fillaboa Wineries, a recognition it received in December 2023. It values, for example, the actions implemented to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the launch of an action plan aimed at optimizing energy demand and usage management, improving energy efficiency, as well as advancements in technology and processes.

Pagos de Araiz, the only one of the three wineries that already held the ISO 14001 certificate—now extended to the entire group—also holds the SWfCP seal and is registered in the Official Carbon Footprint Registry of the Ministry for Ecological Transition. The winery has 31.5 hectares of vineyards managed according to organic farming criteria.

About Masaveu Wineries

The Masaveu family began investing in the winemaking sector in 1974, when they acquired Bodegas Murua, but the family’s vineyard plantings date back to the mid-19th century, specifically in Castellar del Vallés, where the family originates and where Federico Masaveu Rivell started the steps that a century later would be continued by his descendants. Since then, Masaveu Wineries has grown steadily with a strong commitment to quality in the production of its wines across different DOs, embracing an ecological philosophy and utmost respect for the land, where it owns its own vineyards, allowing them to convey the unique personality of each terroir in every bottle. In this way, all of Masaveu Wineries projects across different parts and regions of the country come together under a common denominator: Murua (DOCa. Rioja), Fillaboa (DO. Rías Baixas), Pagos de Araiz (DO. Navarra), Leda (Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León), and Valverán (Asturias).
