Murua Wineries celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, sharing its passion and commitment to the quality of its wines, the hallmark that has defined its half-century of history. To mark the occasion, the Rioja Alavesa winery has launched a limited-edition premium set that includes Veguín de Murua Gran Reserva 2016 and Murua Blanco Fermentado en Barrica 2022.
During this half-century of existence, the winery, led by José Masaveu, General Director of Masaveu Bodegas, has focused on producing high-quality wines, sourced from its 80 hectares of own vineyards, cultivated 100% organically and with a strong commitment to regenerative viticulture.
The history of these 50 years begins in 1974 with Pedro Masaveu Peterson—José Masaveu’s uncle—although the family’s passion for wine dates back further to Federico Masaveu Rivell, who, in the 19th century, owned vineyard plantations in Castellar del Vallés, Barcelona.
Pedro Masaveu combined his passion for art and wine by laying the first stones of what is today Murua Wineries in Elciego, right in the heart of Rioja Alavesa.
Winery, library, and art collection.
The noble building erected by Pedro Masaveu preserves the structure of the manor houses typical of this area of Rioja Alavesa. Inside, it also features an exclusive library and a private art collection, owned by Corporación Masaveu, with sculptures, paintings, and prints from the 16th to the 21st centuries. These exhibitions include works by prestigious artists such as Francisco de Goya, Álvaro Alcalá Galiano, Tomás Hiepes, Juan de Arellano, Fernando Álvarez de Sotomayor, Francisco Bores, and Daniel Quintero, among others, whose artworks decorate various corners of the buildings that make up the Rioja winery.
The winery’s library is another open treasure, housing over 2,455 books and magazines related to the world of wine from the 16th century to the present day. This library features works by the main authors on every aspect of wine, whether from a technical or cultural perspective. The collection includes scientific, literary, essayistic, legal, and popular texts.
Commemorative case
The case, designed to celebrate this milestone, of which only 500 units have been produced, and the included wines, reveal all the nuances and excellence of Murua’s Wineries creations.
As José Masaveu explains and is stated on this case, “We are committed to quality and artisanal winemaking, and for 50 years we have been paying tribute to the terroir of our vineyards, enjoying what we do best: respecting the land and bringing out the personality of each of our plots. We have selected these wines so that our clients can celebrate these 50 years of history with us, toasting to those yet to come.”
Murua Blanco Fermentado en Barrica 2022 shows a straw-yellow color. Its production followed a traditional process, with hand-harvesting of the grapes and a selection in the winery using an artificial vision machine to optimally sort each grape individually. The wine ferments in new French and American oak barrels for 15 days and, once fermentation is complete, it is aged in the same barrels, on its lees, for nine and a half months before being transferred to Murua’s bottling facilities.
On the other hand, Veguín de Murua Gran Reserva 2016, which is produced only in exceptional vintages and limited editions, is a wine of intense, brilliant garnet color, with infinite elegance, and aged for 24 months in new French and American oak barrels.

About Masaveu Wineries
The Masaveu family began investing in the wine sector in 1974, when they acquired Bodega Murua, but the family’s vineyard plantations date back to the mid-19th century, specifically in Castellar del Vallés, where the family originates and where Federico Masaveu Rivell took the first steps that a century later would be continued by his descendants.
Since then, Masaveu Wineries has continued to grow with a strong commitment to quality in the production of its wines across different DOs, as well as to the ecological philosophy they uphold and their utmost respect for the land, where they own their own vineyard plantations, allowing them to convey the unique personality of each terroir in every bottle. In this way, all of Masaveu Wineries projects across different parts and regions of the country come together under a common denominator: Murua (DOCa. Rioja), Fillaboa (DO. Rías Baixas), Pagos de Araiz (DO. Navarra), Leda (Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León), and Valverán (Asturias).
