Veguín de Murua Gran Reserve achieves the best result in its history in Decanter.

The Veguín de Murua Gran Reserva 2015, from Murua Wineries in Rioja Alavesa, has once again received significant recognition, this time at the international Decanter competition—the most prestigious in the world—winning a Gold medal with 96 points. In this way, Decanter places this wine among the best in the country, alongside only 88 other references also awarded this medal. In total, more than 18,000 entries from around the world participated in the latest edition of these awards.

The competition highlights the flavor of Veguín de Murua Gran Reserva and its aroma of “ripe cherries and plums bathed in sweet coconut oak with a hint of tobacco leaves.” It also emphasizes its “crisp texture with a lingering cinnamon finish.”

Veguin

“The score of our Veguín de Murua Gran Reserva demonstrates, once again, that thanks to the effort, dedication, and passion over the years by the winemaker and the entire team—striving for excellence in these wines made from grapes from our own vineyards with great terroir—unique wines are created that take you on a journey of aromas, flavors, and sensations, allowing us to connect with the nature and history of the origin area, thus expressing the soul and personality of the wine,” says José Masaveu, General Director of Masaveu Wineries.

Veguín de Murua Gran Reserva is made from Tempranillo, Graciano, and Mazuelo grapes, selected from very old, some even centennial, vines located at the foot of the Sierra de Cantabria, in the best estates of Bodegas Murua. This premium wine is produced exclusively in exceptional vintages and in limited quantities. From this 2015 vintage, rated as very good, only 54 barrels were produced, yielding 14,465 bottles of 75 cl and 1,000 magnum bottles.

With an intense and bright garnet color, it stands out for its powerful nose, featuring fresh aromas of dry grass, mint, spices, and pleasant balsamic notes. It shows finesse, freshness, and harmony, with character. After some time in the glass, the “bouquet” reveals itself, with aromas of smoke, cinnamon, clove, oak, thyme, mint, and spicy notes. It ages for 25 months in new French and American oak barrels.

About Masaveu Wineries

The Masaveu family began investing in the winemaking sector in 1974, when they acquired Bodegas Murua, but the family’s vineyard plantings date back to the mid-19th century, specifically in Castellar del Vallés, where the family originates and where Federico Masaveu Rivell started the steps that a century later would be continued by his descendants.

Since then, Masaveu Wineries has grown steadily with a strong commitment to quality in the production of its wines across different DOs, embracing an ecological philosophy and utmost respect for the land, where it owns its own vineyards, allowing them to convey the unique personality of each terroir in every bottle. In this way, all of Masaveu Wineries projects across different parts and regions of the country come together under a common denominator: Murua (DOCa. Rioja), Fillaboa (DO. Rías Baixas), Pagos de Araiz (DO. Navarra), Leda (Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León), and Valverán (Asturias).
